Hi all, I’m learning how to apply update for SQL Server 2019 box, current version = 15.0.4410.1 . I did my homework and used only reliable MS sources to find all updates:
15.0.4410.1 – Current Prod Level= RTC
15.0.4430.1 2019 CU –most recent CU
15.0.4455.2 2019 GDR – most recent GDR
After talking to many people and seeing many source I still don’t have definite answer, some people/sources say that GDR works like CU, some say opposite.
Both updates are about the same size. Assume I have only prod box where I need to make reliable update.
Should I apply first CU and then GDR both ?? in the order of their # v number (4430, 4455)
Thanks Ahmed !
That is more reliable way!! Sorry on another MS site I see this , so looks like 4455 is combined CU+GDR. Talked to my boss, he said always with high v number, in this case 4455. Size of 4455 also is bit bigger than 4430. MS make bit mess here I think.
For a production SQL Server 2019 instance, the safest approach is usually to apply the latest Cumulative Update (CU) rather than a GDR. CUs include all previous hotfixes and GDRs, so installing the latest CU (15.0.4430.1 in your case) covers critical fixes and improvements, while GDRs are mainly security-focused patches for older builds. You do not need to install both; just the latest CU is sufficient and recommended. Make sure to test in a staging environment first and take a full backup before applying.
I guess Cumulative Updates (CUs) include all fixes security, bug fixes, and improvements while GDR updates only cover the critical security stuff. So if you install the latest CU, you’re already getting everything from the GDR, and there’s no need to apply it separately. CUs are usually the way to go for production servers since they keep everything fully up to date.
