SQL Server 2012 and/or 2012 R2

Recently a "vendor" asked my manager why not use SQL Server v2012 R2 "instead" of v2012.
That got me thinking (and couple of colleagues) that lately we haven't seen both version being talked about on the web.
After a quick search I couldn't find a reference to v2012.

Can someone shed some light into topic?
Were there really two versions of SQL 2012 or did the vendor confused my manager?

Thanks,
lec

There's no SQL Server 2012 R2. There's a SQL Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2012, SQL Server 2014, and soon to be SQL Server 2016. Windows Server 2012 comes in an R2 version.

Looks Like a Stranger walking on the way. Only the version that is available for SQL Server 2012 is "SQL Server 2012 in R2 flavour". The R2 version comes in Windows Server 2012. :grinning:
