Sql 2008 r2

i,

Please can I ask for some advice. I look after a range of servers and one is server 2012 and SQL 2008 R2.The SQL is out of support so the customer wants to move to SQL 2016.
He does not want a new server for side by side and he does not want an inline upgrade for many reasons. He wants a SQL 2016 instance installed on the same server. Once set up we will uninstall SQL 2008 R2. I know they share components and I was wondering if uninstalling 2008 might break the 2016 install. Any advice gratefully received.
thanks
John

While not ideal, what is proposed should work although you will have to be careful about licensing and memory while both instances are running.
I suspect that uninstalling SQL2008 R2 will not get rid off all its components.
It may be safer just to stop and disable all the SQL2008 R2 services.

Thank you. I'll see if that removes the security issue.

What is the OS on that server? It must be Windows Server 2012 or higher - as that is the minimum supported OS for SQL Server 2016.
