Hi experts, it's been a while since I setup t-repl. When I config it (for all articles in the db), do I need to do a backup and restore of the db on the subscriber first? Doesn't the initial Snapshot do that anyway?

It happens through the snapshot.
In addition to snapshot, initialize from backup is an option:
Thanks guys. We hit a compatibility issue - can't replicate a 2008 db to 2019.
So my next question is: Can the DataCenter 2019 O/S support/host a SQL 2014 instance?

According to the documentation (archived copy) it can:
Bear in mind that SQL Server 2014 no longer has mainstream support from MS, you'd have to purchase extended support if you need it.
